(15) Defeating Discouragement with Ourselves - Conclusion

There is no need for believers to walk in spiritual defeat and discouragement. Our ability to live in victory is fully assured in Christ. Let’s summarize what we learned about walking in this victory.

1. I must recognize and remind myself of the truth that in Christ, I am not dead in sin, I am dead to sin. I am not helpless to have victory over sin.

2. I must choose to say "no" to sin and "yes" to God, looking at this as my daily battle.

3. I will never find victory over my spiritual failure, sin, and discouragement as long as I look for this victory in myself as a human being. I need help from outside my humanity.

4. Though the victory will not be found in myself as a human being (the flesh), it can be found in Christ. Victory is found in His ability to conquer sin and the enablement He gives me to live victoriously.

5. There is no place for defeat, discouragement, or self-condemnation in Christ.

6. I must choose to listen to and obey the desires of the Spirit instead of listening to and obeying the desires of my flesh. I do this by staying away from those things which dishonor God and what He approves of and by saturating my life with God, His Word, Worship, and fellowship with Him.

Victory over “spiritual discouragement” is a matter of faith
from beginning to end.

I must rest in who I am in Christ,
perfectly redeemed and righteous.

I must rely on who Christ is in me,
graciously enabling me to live in redemption and righteousness.
Now to the one who is able to keep you from falling, and to cause you to stand, rejoicing, without blemish before his glorious presence, 25 to the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen. ( Jude 1:24-25)
